What you thinking? A spoken word poem that likens having anxiety to a soldier in war. The poem: We sit there, me, you and our teddy unicorn, cuddling on your bed, We watch Netflix, and I softly play with the hair nestled on your head. With each playful stroke, you look adorable, like a pet, curled up, head resting on my chest, And with a pleasurable sigh, you utter "You're the best". You smile in my direction, I smile back in yours. You hit the space-bar on the laptop. Pause. "What you thinking?" You ask, moving my hand from the task it was set to complete. "Nothing, I'm just tired." I reply, a feeble attempt to retreat. I hit the space-bar on the laptop. Play. Pause. You hit the space-bar again, "I know you're thinking something" "How can you tell?" "You've gone quiet, I know you so well, When you dwell on your thoughts, you go quiet." What she didn't know, was that in my head, there was a riot. A relentless riot. And I didn't have a shield To protect me as I wandered defenseless Into the riotous battlefield that was my mind. I didn't want you to be caught in the crossfire of the violence, So I chose to fight my battle in silence. "What you thinking?" I can feel the damage of the attacks sinking Deeper into the depths of my flesh, I stare at the laptops F5 key, praying my mind would hit refresh, But it just wouldn't understand the command, So my mind was left wide open in no man's land. "What you thinking? You can tell me." I look up to see a pair of beady eyes and a yellow horn poking me, and I realise that your jokingly voicing our teddy unicorn. We laugh, and I want to tell you that inside I feel like a soldier in a war. Torn Apart by the enemy's total warfare. To go beyond the call of duty was out of the question... "What you thinking?" Your eyes say as you stare, "Nothing, don't worry, I'm okay." We watch Netflix, and I softly play with the hair nestled on your head, We sit there, me, you and our teddy unicorn cuddling on your bed. In your arms, I'm at peace, And I can feel the fire slowly start to cease.
