Schizophrenia is the most common diagnosis where psychosis is a feature. It affects around 1% of the population - roughly 565,000 people in England alone and is characterised by a mix of: Positive symptoms like hallucinations, delusions, and disorganised thinking Negative symptoms including flat mood, withdrawal, and anhedonia Cognitive symptoms such as memory impairment and trouble expressing thoughts The affects for people living with a diagnosis of schizophrenia are both varied and uncertain. Affects that can have a severe impact on quality of life, are multiplied by factors such as identity and intersectionality, have a knock effect on physical health and in many cases are made considerably worse by the the same medication they rely on to alleviate symptoms. It’s also one of the most widely misunderstood mental health conditions and one of the most commonly misrepresented on screen. In this video essay, we explore how schizophrenia and psychosis are portrayed in film. From true stories to psychological thrillers, we look at what films get right and how storytelling shapes public understanding. ============================= ⏱️ Chapter Markers: 0:00 Intro 03:15 A Beautiful Mind 06:05 Shutter Island 08:52 The Soloist 11:04 Joker 14:24 Conclusion 15:37 Outro ============================= #mentalhealth #Schizophrenia #Psychosis #FilmAnalysis #VideoEssay
