Couple’s Military Truck Camper Conversion Will Blow Your Mind! ----------------------------------------------- Kyla and Lou didn’t just want a camper — they wanted a rolling fortress. So instead of buying a regular van, they went full throttle and picked up a 1988 Mercedes-Benz Unimog, a rugged ex-military truck built for hauling troops through battlefields. The plan? Transform it into a fully self-sufficient, off-grid adventure home that could handle New Zealand’s wildest backroads. The Unimog came as bare bones as they get — no insulation, no creature comforts, just raw steel and insane ground clearance. That made it the perfect blank canvas. Lou kicked things off by cutting a crawl-through portal between the cab and living quarters, so they could move between the two without stepping into bad weather. He framed it in welded aluminum, sealed it tight, and hid wooden inserts inside so they could screw into it without leaving exposed hardware. From there, they laid a plywood floor — strong yet lightweight — with hidden wiring channels and moisture protection underneath. Next came the plumbing: kitchen sink, mixer taps, greywater lines, even a custom shower setup, all routed cleanly out of sight. One of their smartest space savers is a push-button bed lift, letting them reclaim precious vertical space during the day. The electrical system runs off 12V DC for efficiency, fed by rooftop solar panels on a custom rack. Even the water tanks are modular and tucked neatly between the truck’s frame rails, making them easy to swap out. Inside, every wall, corner, and cabinet was custom-built to fit the Unimog’s quirky curves — no straight lines here. Overhead storage tapers with the roof so you don’t bump your head, drawers lock for off-road travel, and a breathable mesh layer under the mattress stops moisture buildup. Warm wood countertops treated with teak oil bring a homey touch, while LED strip lighting sets the mood without draining the batteries. Then there are the showstopper exterior upgrades. They designed a detachable steel-framed balcony platform that mounts off the roof rack — perfect for lounging when parked but removable to keep clearance on the road. There’s also a foldable pull-up rig with resistance band mounts, proving this truck is as much a gym as it is a home. Before moving inside, Lou completely stripped and sanded the cab, lined every surface with butyl rubber sound deadening topped with reflective foil, then added closed-cell foam insulation. This makes the truck quieter and comfortable in all seasons. Finally, it was time for paint — and they went big. Using Raptor paint, a textured, UV-resistant coating, they created a tough two-tone finish: custom sage green for the body and matte black for the trim and bars. Twenty-eight liters later, the Unimog looked like a military machine crossed with a designer overland rig. From the reinforced crawl-through to the handcrafted hardwood countertop, from retractable toilet doors to that genius balcony, every inch of this build is pure craftsmanship. This isn’t just a camper — it’s a rolling legacy, built by two people who refused to settle for ordinary. And now, with the keys in the ignition, Kyla and Lou are ready to take their home — and their dream — absolutely anywhere. ------------------------------------------------ Out the gate Off road 🌞🏔️: YouTube: / @outthegateoffroadnz ----------------------------------------------- For any issue please contact us at 👇🏻 tticopyright311@gmail.com Facebook : / ttienglish007 Instagram : / top_10_information Twitter : / tti_english ------------------------------------------ Disclaimer: TTI English is not affiliated with the businesses whose products are shown in this review.
