Crop load management: Signalling compounds that induce flowering

Agriculture Victoria research scientists Priyanka Reddy and Vilnis Ezernieks speak about their PIPS Program research into biennial bearing, which is thought to coincide with the development of fruitlets. Using complex data analysis of plant tissue extracts, they discovered that chemicals that belong to the salicylic acid group of phytohormones were found to induce flowering. By understanding the metabolic processes associated with biennial bearing, researchers will be able to identify chemicals that can be applied to trees to achieve a more consistent crop load. This research project is part of the PIPS3 Program’s Advancing sustainable and technology driven apple orchard production systems (AP19003) project.
