A few days ago Gianmaria Testa would have turned 65, a great Italian songwriter, who passed too soon. This is my rendition of one of his songs, one of my favorite. An attempt to an English translation of the lyrics: The first was the Cape of Good Hope Closed by law and special decree So that the peaceful waves Would stop adulterating the other sea Then came the turn of Panama and Suez And then the Bosphorus and Gibraltar Every surging sea demanded respect For its sovereign independence (CHORUS) No more exchanges of waters and fish No more circumnavigations in sailboats All the canals remained closed To any passage of foreign tides For a while, the waters of the world's seas Returned to quietness But it didn't last long before a wave started To say that it was time to end it It happened that one day in our own sea The Ionian Sea demanded to be alone And so did the Tyrrhenian The sea of Sardinia and the Adriatic in a hurry (CHORUS) In short, "let no one mix with anyone" The waters of the deep sea thundered "Let each one stay anchored at its ports And only bathe its native sands" It seemed to be over, but it was only the beginning And so it was ugly to see In what had been the great expanse The torment of the ditches dividing the sea It was only the beginning, as already mentioned Because now the secessionist fever Was infecting every single shore And no one and nothing could stop it (CHORUS) So from Trieste to the tip of Puglia And from Sicily to the Costa del Sole Every little cove demanded Independence, and not just in words But the matter became ugly When madness got drop and drop And each, looking at its neighbor Said, "Go away, or I'll break your face" The sea soon turned into a great dew Useless to fish and any creature The tuna, anchovy, swordfish died The deep-sea boats ran aground And then one day, or one night, I don't know Something even stranger happened You know the H2O formula Yes, the one for water, which we all know (CHORUS) Well, hydrogen had objections Claimed to have the majority And therefore the sovereign right to aspire To the now sacred independence There was like an endless wind, a breath And the sea's water vaporized into the sky A desert of salt and granite remained But dark and deeper than the deepest black
