Appleton's discovery of the ionosphere 11 December 1924

One hundred years ago, on the 11th December 1924, Edward Appleton and his research student conducted an experiment that proved the existence of a radio-reflecting layer high in the upper atmosphere. This experiment explained how Marconi was able to send a radio signal across the Atlantic in 1901 and started a whole new realm of science into what was to become known as the ionosphere. In this short video, space scientist Chris Scott describes Appleton's experiment and the ionospheric measurements that followed.
