One of the oldest dynasties in Europe, the House of Savoy has its roots in the Middle Ages, at a time when the political geography of the continent was dominated by empires and kingdoms in perpetual struggle for power. Growing up in the heart of the Alps, in the shadow of the Holy Roman Empire and the Kingdom of France, the dynasty skilfully navigated alliances, wars and strategic marriages. From a small mountain county, the Savoy established themselves as a powerful duchy, gradually expanding their territories and influence. Century after century, their power was consolidated, culminating in the proclamation of the Kingdom of Sardinia, which paved the way for Italian unification. From a small county to a powerful duchy to a glorious kingdom: this is the long journey of the House of Savoy, which from a simple noble family was able to transform itself into a protagonist of European history and architect of the dream of a united Italy. In this first video, we retrace the milestones from the birth of the dynasty with the presumed progenitor, Umberto I Biancamano, to the complex and fascinating figure of Amedeo VIII, the first Duke of Savoy and, at a crucial moment in ecclesiastical history, also antipope under the name of Felice V.
