Well, if you like Winsor & Newton's Cotman Watercolors you will love these! Today I am reviewing a newcomer to the watercolor scene, the Pheonix half pan artists watercolor in the metal tin: https://amzn.to/3kgoHGh Disclaimer: All opinions in the review are my own. I personally purchased these items for review and have no ties to either Phoenix or Winsor & Newton. Affiliate links used. I am comparing them to the Winsor & Newton Cotman Watercolor that I bought back in 2016: https://amzn.to/3dKo5GL *I thought I bought them 5 years ago, it was only 4 years ago. Time is weird LOL! The similarities between the Winsor & Newton Cotman watercolors (their student range) and Phoenix Artist half pan watercolors are uncanny. They seem like identical paint to me. This review is on the Pheonix 12 color set but I think if you were to purchase a set I'd go with one of the larger ones for the stronger colors that would be more versatile for mixing. When comparing the 12 color sets the W&N Cotman sets have better colors but they are more expensive for similar paint. Pros: Price Nice tin in a pretty metallic blue Tin has room for more pans down the center (12 set anyway) Colors rewet well Layer well *Be careful because you might end up lifting if you are too aggressive. Lifts well Pigment info available transparent Decent lightfastness Student grade Cons: The color selection in the 12 color set is lacking, it has 2 warm reds, one of which is fugitive, a burnt umber which is a mixed pigment, and 2 greens that are not very useful. A 12 color set should feature the most useful colors and this is lacking. the 24 color set is much better. Bottom Line: If you want more Cotman quality paint give it a try. These are a traditional watercolor of a student grade quality. They are not bad at all. They area bit more expensive than other "private label brand" paints but they are a bit better than those budget brands. I think the Pretty Excellent watercolor is still the best bet in the budget/student range but you don't get pigment info with those so if lightfastness is important this would be a better bet.
