Horizon Forbidden West - Ultra Hard (New Game) - Hunting Grounds (Sheerside) Plasma Blast Trial

Full Hunting Grounds playlist here:    • Horizon Forbidden West - Ultra Hard (New G...   After two incredibly easy trials, this was probably the toughest thing in the game yet. To be fair, that's because I got stuck doing it the wrong way. The Boltblaster is terrible for applying elements on Ultra Hard and I advise you not do the challenge like this. Wait until you've obtained the Glowblast Sharpshot Bow from Thornmarsh, fully upgraded and equipped with three Plasma +15% damage coils (also sold in Thornmarsh). I just got caught in a stubborn cycle where I wanted to prove I could do this the game's "intended" way with the Plasma Boltblaster sold at this Hunting Grounds. Since this challenge is meant to be an introduction to Plasma ammo and is easy on Normal Mode, you might be wondering what makes it difficult here. First, elemental application is sorely nerfed on Ultra Hard. With the small rate the Boltblaster applies it (even at max level) and its brutal reload times coupled with fat-rolling, it's extremely difficult to not "fall behind" and let your hard work get reset to empty while trying to apply Plasma. But a more serious problem is the Bellowbacks. Enemy AI is tuned up for Ultra Hard and Stealth is nerfed. So practically as soon as you start attacking the Rollerback you'll be hit with a flood of acid and freeze blasts from the surrounding Bellowbacks. No matter what armor I equipped they would kill me within a second once they started ganging up on me. On top of that the Rollerback itself is plenty dangerous and can deal nearly your entire lifebar with his roll if you get caught up in it. Beyond the basic needs of survival, you have to apply enough damage after you finally land the Plasma status to build it up to the maximum explosion. This isn't hard per se, but while trying to evade Bellowback spam it can easily get away from you. I solved these various problems in a few different ways. First I had to respec my talent tree to gain Elemental Fury. I picked up the Boltblaster Weapon Technique "Sustained Burst", as well as "Braced Shot" for the Sharpshot Bow. I also focused on maxing out my healing with berries and potions, stealth, Smoke Bomb capacity, and Stamina and Valor Surge. I then equipped the level 1 Tenakth Vindicator (gained from the quest line "The Deluge") because it comes with +2 Stamina+. Coupled with the ones from the skill tree, this gives you enough Stamina to use Sustained Burst twice from full Stamina. Next I had to max out my Plasma Boltblaster. Alongside various other ingredients this required six Rockbreaker Mining Claws. This is fortunately a lot easier than it sounds. There's a Rockbreaker site down near the Las Vegas area (Tower of Tears in-game) where there's one sitting out in the open, just sort of chilling. You can sneak up on him, shoot off a claw, then book it to the campfire, rinse, repeat, try again. Even without that level of caution, it's way easier to pick off all four of his limbs in this game anyway with a decent Hunter Bow with Advanced Hunter Arrows and Triple Arrow. Worst case you can respec to add Part Breaker. From here you can see the result. I start off by using two rounds of Sustained Burst to apply the first round of Plasma, followed by a point-blank (ouch) Braced Shot to push it to max explosive damage. This is a tricky setup to reproduce, and if you're hit by an enemy attack during this sequence you'll lose too much Stamina (or time trying to restore Stamina) to finish applying Plasma. Because of this, I saved the easier setup for the second application, where I use Elemental Fury combined with a Sustained Burst. At this point the fight is always devolving into chaos so I struggle to get off enough damage to get the maximum explosion, but with a couple of lucky shots through the smoke I make it here. Throughout all of this I spam Smoke Bombs and Stamina Potions to make things manageable. Even with this tightly scripted setup a lot goes wrong, and this probably took me 20 attempts even once I was sure I had a winning approach. The main issue is the cooldown on Smoke Bombs, which is longer than their duration and I would often die to Bellowback spam during the interlude. Also the Rollerback moves vast distances when it uses its roll attack, and it will often go beyond the Boltblaster range or behind a Bellowback. I don't have enough leeway for significant repositioning, so those moments generally just mean a loss. Even after all of this I win with only 4 seconds to spare. I wasn't even watching the clock at the end, thankfully, or I would have been freaking out wondering if the last Plasma Shock was going to go off on time or not. Having to redo this after missing the cutoff by a couple of seconds would have been supremely upsetting. Regardless, I think this makes a nice video but I'd like to reiterate, don't do this challenge this way. Come back with a Bow that can apply Plasma instead.
