THE WALKING GIANT - CHORDS AND BASSES - Slowly paced, but not as a funeral march but rather pathetically broad, this prelude appears with its heavy chords and octave basses, which utilize the entire lower register of the modern piano - right down to the lowest note. In the middle section, the fugue subject “- - E - A - D H A - D - E” appears for the first time and then becomes a constant companion. A kind of recapitulation allows the opening theme to be heard once again in D Dorian, played entirely on the white keys, before the piece descends further and further to the low “A” and ends in pianissimo morendo.
