Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation (GMDC) will build the first and only rare earth elements hub in the country, said Roopwant Singh, IAS, Managing Director of GMDC. In a significant push for India's 'Atma Nirbhata' or self-reliance in strategic sectors, Singh detailed plans for a processing hub in Gujarat based on what he termed the 'world's eighth best asset'. The focus will be on four key elements—Neodymium (Nd), Praseodymium (Pr), Dysprosium (Dy), and Terbium (Tb)—which are critical for making compact permanent magnets for electric vehicles and wind turbines. Singh stated that these elements are the 'secret sauce' for the energy transition. The project, located on Gujarat's 'golden corridor', will involve mining, processing, and refining to make the country self-sufficient and reduce strategic vulnerabilities.
