NEURO SQUARE: Rejuvenating aging brains — Revitalization and memory recovery using neural stem cells

NEURO SQUARE is a series of talks featuring passionate researchers who are eager to share their findings and knowledge gained through their studies. In this talk, Kageyama discusses his research on activating dormant neural stem cells and restoring cognitive function in aging brains. During embryonic development, the human brain is formed from neural stem cells. Interestingly, neural stem cells also exist in specific parts of the adult brain, contributing to the creation of new neurons and playing a crucial role in learning, memory, and other cognitive functions. However, as we age, the capacity to generate new neurons declines, making some brain functions more difficult. Through our research, we have discovered that by manipulating specific genes responsible for revitalization and suppression of stem cells, we can rejuvenate these cells and promote the creation of new neurons, thus restoring some brain function.
