Surface coatings and sealers are a useful tool to help keep outside chemicals from penetrating into concrete. This video explains how impermeable, reactive, vapor permeable sealers work in concrete. Different categories and challenges for each type of sealer is discussed. There is an extended discussion on vapor permeable membranes and their performance. These membranes are especially beneficial for concrete because they are low cost, easy to apply, and show good performance in the field. Field work is presented that shows the lifespan of silane coatings in Oklahoma bridges. Also, insights are given about how the coatings fail and what can be done after they stop performing.
