In this video in the "Ask the Contractor" series from http://www.UniqueVanities.com, Randy answers the question of how to fix a short in a light socket. Transcription: Hello, my name is Randy. I am here today with uniquevanities.com. Our "Ask the Contractor" question of the day is, "How to fix a short in a light socket?" As a professional electrician, if you don't have a real basic knowledge of the mechanics of electrical work, I suggest you just hire somebody to do it, but it is a pretty easy process. The light socket you need to take out of the old fixture, lamp or whatever it is. You can just take it to any of your box stores, Home Depot, Lowe's, hardware stores and match it up to another socket. They usually have a multitude of different sockets. They all operate the same, but it's really how they attach to the fixture is what you are looking for. There is usually a nut or stem that holds the socket on there and then there will be two screw terminals on the backside where the wires are attached. It's simply taking the wires off, make sure obviously first and foremost that it's unplugged and the power is off and reattaching the new socket the same way you took it off. Pay attention to the polarity or the color of the wire and where they were attached, just so you can put it back in the correct way. Again, if this is something that you don't feel like you have the general knowledge, I suggest hiring a professional electrician to take care of this. Hope this helps.
