Is this something I should be interested in, something I should use or something I should avoid? Hi. I’m Dr. Dan Stein, Neurology of Cannabis owner and board-certified neurologist. We will be answering that and other questions today. So thanks for tuning in. Back in 1985, pharmaceutical companies were interested in producing synthetic THC. One of these products, Marinol, was approved by the FDA for patients who are having cancer, chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting as well as AIDS-related wasting, cachexia and anorexia. Those patients who already knew that cannabis therapy in its natural plant form was helpful for reducing nausea and stimulating appetite. Well, the synthetic form of THC, Marinol was approved and utilized by a lot of cancer docs. These oncologists found shortly thereafter that patients were not happy with synthetic THC. They preferred to use the plant-based medication as it occurs in nature and Marinol also had a host of side effects. It was difficult to use. So from then until now, even though pharmaceutical companies are still trying to produce synthetic analogs of THC and other cannabinoids, we are finding that in general, plant-based therapies seem to work better. In fact, one particular drug called Rimonabant, which was approved for use in the European Union, was supposed to help patients with obesity by blocking CB-1 receptors, reducing appetite and promoting weight loss. Sort of the opposite of the munchies. After two years however, that drug was withdrawn from the market because it also triggered depression and encouraged suicide. Terrible. Fortunately, those types of drugs are no longer available and patients are finding that as they occur in nature, plant-based therapy with cannabis is more effective and more safe than the pharmaceutical-generated synthetic counterparts.
