Aruna Roy on why she quit IAS and if it has been worth it

Aruna Roy talks about the importance of dissent in a democracy and the contemporary socio-political issues that face the nation. In her exclusive interview with Shoma Choudhury on 17 March 2018, she revisits the idea of privilege. Determined to become the voice of the marginalised sections of the society, she co-founded the Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan after quitting her career as an IAS officer. On protests, she speaks about the attempts of the government to limit accessibility to spaces of dissent and the lack of media coverage of important protests. She says, “the roads are people’s parliament.” So she feels that it is impossible to kill the cultures of protest in a diverse country like India. One of the key persons, who spearheaded the movement for Right to Information Act, she speaks about the significance of holding the government accountable.
