In this episode, following the announcement of a £76 million pound plan worth of cuts (including a 10% cut in the dole), the American bankers cable that they would be willing to lend money in order to balance the budget. This good news, however, is immediately followed by horror. The growing division within the Labour cabinet comes to a head following a vote to agree on the cuts: 9 cabinet members dissent. Despite a majority agreeing, this would mean the end of the Second Labour Government. Ramsay MacDonald would receive encouragement from both the King, and some members of the Opposition, to form a National Government; however, this did not stop him from feeling like he would be betraying the party he had devoted so much of his life to.
