The Symphony No. 9 in C major, D 944, known as The Great, is the final symphony completed by Franz Schubert. It was first published by Breitkopf & Härtel in 1849 and listed as Symphony No. 8 in the New Schubert Edition. It was originally called The Great C major to distinguish it from his Symphony No. 6, the Little C major, but the subtitle is now usually taken as a reference to the symphony's majesty. Schubert began his Symphony No. 9 in the summer of 1825 and continued to work on it over the next two years. In 1828 Vienna’s Gesellschaft der Musikfreunde (Society of Friends of Music) agreed to give the premiere, but the orchestra struggled with the length and technical complexity of the new piece and ultimately refused to perform it. He died nearly a month before that work’s premiere on December 14, 1828. The first two movements feature Karl Böhm with the Staatskapelle Dresden Orchestra The last two movements feature George Szell with the Cleveland Orchestra Performances used are in this playlist: • Schubert Symphony no.9 1.
