Akki Rava Pundi is a traditional Mangalorean–Udupi style breakfast dish made from akki rava (rice rava / idli rava). It is a wholesome, mildly spiced dish that is steamed, making it light and healthy. "Pundi" means steamed dumpling in Tulu/Kannada. These dumplings are prepared by cooking rice rava with water, tempering spices, and then shaping into balls before steaming. They are soft inside, slightly firm outside, and pair beautifully with coconut chutney, sambar, or a drizzle of coconut oil. This dish is especially popular in coastal Karnataka households and is often served as a hearty breakfast or evening snack. Akki Rava Pundi – Recipe Ingredients: Rice rava (akki rava / idli rava) – 1 cup Water – 1.5 cups Grated coconut – 2 tbsp (optional, for flavor) Oil – 2 tbsp Mustard seeds – ½ tsp Urad dal – ½ tsp Fenugreek seeds - 1/2 tsp Sugar - 1 tbsp Salt – to taste Method: Prepare the tempering: Heat oil in a thick-bottomed kadai. Add mustard seeds, let them splutter. Add Fenugreek seeds, urad dal. Fry till golden. Cook the mixture: Add Rice Rava Add 1.5 cups of water to the tempering. Add salt and sugar let it come to a boil. Stir in grated coconut (if using). Cook on low flame until the mixture thickens and leaves the sides of the pan (like upma consistency). Shape the dumplings: Allow the mixture to cool slightly. Grease your palms with a little oil or water and shape into lemon-sized balls. Steam the pundis: Place the shaped pundis in an idli steamer or cooker without whistle. Steam for 20 minutes. Serve hot: Serve with coconut chutney, sambar, or a drizzle of coconut oil.
