Today we head out west to the South Lake Tahoe Airport (KTVL) to discuss runways, wind, and how they relate. In this video you will learn about the following in the Airfoillabs Cessna 172: 1. Runway numbers and their orientation 2. Various runway markings and what they mean to you as a pilot 3. How to determine which runway to take off and land on 4. How to set wind layers in X-Plane 5. How to determine the wind direction and speed in X-Plane We run through three different scenarios to demonstrate the wind and runway relationship. In the first, we take off with a 15 knot headwind. In the second, we take off with a 15 knot tailwind. Using the runway markings, we measure the difference in our takeoff roll between the two. Then we try a challenging crosswind landing with 15 knots of direct crosswind as we discuss how to counter the effects of a crosswind. Make the most out of your flight simulator experience or use the flight simulator to practice as a student pilot or beyond. Note that while the features of this unit in X-Plane closely mimic those of the real unit, there are some differences. This tutorial should be used for X-Plane purposes only. However, gaining a familiarity with this system will likely aid in your transition to units in the airplane. Visit www.Clayviation.com for more and while you're there, subscribe to the weekly blog!
