The stage was set. German swimmer Wiltrud Urselmann, the current world record holder for the women's 200m breaststroke was up against the previous record holder, Anita Lonsbrough from Great Britain. While Urselmann held the record for the event, Lonsborough had a history of beating her rival when they were placed head to head. At the Olympic Games, anything could happen. Knowing the nineteen year-old Brit was a very strong finisher, Urselmann began the race at a very strong pace to take the early lead. Lonsbrough only managed to caught up and pass Urselmann in the final 50 metres, with the German fighting back harder than in any previous race between the two of them. With an Olympic gold medal at stake, Lonsbrough also brought her greatest effort to final metres, becoming the new Olympic champion with a new record time of 2m49.5s. Anita Lonsbrough was the most famous British swimmer for decades, as the last British woman swimmer to win Olympic gold until Rebecca Adlington at the Beijing 2008 Games.
