Feet of protesters dancing around burning remains of effigy STORYLINE: Police clashed with protesters in the Indonesian capital of Jakarta on Wednesday as a third consecutive day of demonstrations against US-led strikes on Afghanistan got under way. Tear gas was fired to stop 300 Islamic students entering the grounds of the parliament and officers were forced to beat other protesters during a separate rally outside the US embassy. Witnesses said riot officers took action at the parliament after demonstrators pushed over its main gate. Some protesters set light to an effigy of President George W. Bush and danced around its burning remains. Several groups staged noisy demonstrations outside the heavily guarded embassy and the United Nations building, carrying banners and waving fists. They demanded Indonesia freeze its diplomatic relations with Washington. The embassy, fortified with rows of razor wire, remained closed on Wednesday even though Indonesian security forces increased its defences. Two water cannons, employed in clashes on Tuesday, were also stationed there. Amid media reports in the United States that the US campaign against terrorism may now focus more closely on organisations operating in Asian countries other than Afghanistan, the leader of Indonesia's Darul Islam group Al Chaidah spoke of the many invitations his members had extended to Osama bin Laden to visit the country. About 85 percent of Indonesia's 210 (M) million people are Muslim. So far the protests have been relatively small and analysts say most Indonesians are not actively hostile toward the United States.
