If you love discovering rare tropical plants that are both unique and easy to care for, this video is for you. Today I’m sharing my 2-year review of the Philodendron rubrocinctum platinum, a plant that most houseplant lovers have never even heard of. With its large, heart-shaped leaves and unusual silvery sheen, this philodendron is a hidden gem in the aroid world. I’ve been growing mine for over two years now, and I wanted to break down everything you might want to know before deciding if this plant deserves a spot in your collection. Like all my review videos, I’ll cover background, growth speed, propagation, availability, pests, care accessories, and wrap up with my final thoughts. 🌿 Background: What Makes This Philodendron Special? Philodendron rubrocinctum platinum is a rare and striking tropical houseplant that originates from Central and South America. It belongs to the Araceae family, the same plant family that gives us favorites like Philodendron gloriosum, anthuriums, and monstera. What sets the platinum variety apart is the silvery platinum sheen on its large heart-shaped leaves. Unlike some rare philodendrons that look dramatic but require lots of attention, this one is surprisingly beginner-friendly. It grows steadily, adapts to household conditions, and rewards you with lush foliage that instantly becomes a conversation starter. 🌱 Speed of Growth Over the past two years, I’ve noticed that the rubrocinctum platinum isn’t the fastest philodendron, but it’s definitely not slow either. It puts out consistent new growth if given bright indirect light and proper humidity. Think of it as a steady grower that won’t overwhelm you but also won’t frustrate you with painfully slow progress. 🌱 Ease of Propagation One of the most common questions I get is: Can you propagate Philodendron rubrocinctum platinum easily? The answer is yes. Stem cuttings root very well in water, moss, or even directly in soil if you keep the humidity up. This makes it a great plant not only for collectors but also for anyone who enjoys sharing cuttings with friends or selling rare plant cuttings. 🌿 Availability When I first started looking for this plant, it was incredibly hard to find. In fact, most people I spoke with hadn’t even heard of it. Fast forward to now, and it’s becoming a bit more available thanks to rare plant nurseries and online sellers. Prices vary, but because it’s still relatively uncommon, you should expect it to be more expensive than mainstream philodendrons. 🐛 Pests and Problems Like many tropical houseplants, the rubrocinctum platinum can be susceptible to common pests like spider mites, mealybugs, and thrips. However, I’ve found it to be relatively resilient. Regularly wiping down the leaves and keeping humidity balanced has kept mine pest-free for the most part. Accessories & Care Tips This plant thrives in: Bright, indirect light A well-draining aroid mix (soil + perlite + bark) Moderate to high humidity Occasional feeding with a balanced fertilizer I also recommend using a moss pole or support, since the rubrocinctum platinum can develop large leaves that look incredible when the plant climbs. 🌟 Final Thoughts After growing this philodendron for two years, I can confidently say it’s not one of my favorite rare plants.
