What we now know as Michigan Medicine, the University of Michigan's academic medical center, began 150 years ago in Ann Arbor. In late 1869, U-M opened the nation's first university-owned hospital, to care for patients receiving care from professors at the Medical School. From those roots, U-M has developed one of the largest, busiest, most well-regarded academic medical centers in the world, with a consistent mission of advancing patient care, medical education, and life sciences research.
