Out of nowhere, Mary Diogo wasn’t able to digest the food she ate and kept throwing up. “Towards the end it was getting hourly, and it was hell,” she recalled. “He would say what are we going to have for supper tonight? I would say I don’t care, it’s only going to come back up anyway. You get so frustrated that you really don’t want to eat.” Doctors determined she had a rare condition called Achalasia. Lee Health Gastroenterologist Dr. Augustine Salami said it’s when patients have difficulty swallowing and digesting food. “They’re eating, but the food is not going into the stomach. So the food sits and your esophagus for days until it has enough pressure to push its way through.” The food can sit there for days. Patients can experience chest pain and lose weight. Until 2007 it required surgery to treat it, but now there is a more minimally invasive approach called a Peroral Endoscopic Myotomy or POEM. “I’m able to go down the esophagus go down the mouth create an entrance into the wall of the esophagus and cut the muscle from the inside,” said Dr. Salami. Diogo received the procedure and within a couple weeks, she was able to eat again. “My husband took me out to eat and the first thing I wanted was chili. I had a great big bowl of chili and I tell you it was heaven. Heaven!” You can learn more by searching for gastroenterology on leehealth.org.
