How a Model Train Inspired Disney to Build Disneyland

The Carolwood Pacific Railroad was a miniature live-steam railroad built by Walt Disney in the late 1940s at his home on Carolwood Drive in Los Angeles. Walt, an avid train enthusiast, constructed the railroad in his backyard as a personal passion project. The track spanned approximately one-third of an acre and featured a small, custom-built locomotive named Lilly Belle, after his wife, Lillian. The railroad had intricate landscapes, including tunnels, trestles, and curves, making it a miniature masterpiece. It was a symbol of Walt’s love for trains and his meticulous attention to detail, offering a glimpse into the creativity that would later shape Disneyland. After Walt Disney’s family sold the home in 1953, the railroad was disassembled, but its legacy lived on. The train and much of the track were relocated to the Los Angeles Live Steamers Railroad Museum in Griffith Park, where they were carefully restored and are now displayed for public viewing. The Carolwood Pacific remains a tribute to Walt’s fascination with trains and his vision for immersive, imaginative environments, influencing the design of Disneyland’s own railroad.
