On 4 August 1972, Ugandan dictator Idi Amin announced that all Asians without Ugandan citizenship – around 60,000 people – had 90 days to leave the country. He accused them of economic sabotage and declared that God had told him to “give Uganda back to Ugandans.” The Asian population in Uganda, largely descended from Indian migrants brought during British colonial rule, had become a prosperous and integral part of the economy. The expulsion triggered a global humanitarian crisis, as thousands of families were forced to flee with little notice and few possessions. Britain, Canada, and other countries offered asylum, while the international community condemned Amin’s actions as a violation of human rights. In Britain, several local councils opposed the policy of resettlement; Leicester City Council worked to discourage Ugandan Asian refugees from settling in the city. The forced expulsion, which Amin claimed was inspired by Adolf Hitler’s anti-semitic persecution of European Jews, devastated Uganda’s economy. Many expelled Ugandan Asians rebuilt their lives from scratch, becoming a symbol of resilience and contributing significantly to their new societies.
