This episode focuses on the Newari language spoken by the Newar people of Bhaktapur, Nepal. I hope to interview some native speakers of various endangered and minority languages and regional languages so that people can hear, learn, and compare some of the languages of the Himalayan region. One can read up on the linguistic families and histories. I am hoping to provide an informal sampling of some people who are from these communities and how they are speaking the language in their communities today. My hope is to encourage preservation and promotion of these languages. Language and culture loss is a very real problem in many places of the world and certainly in the Himalayan regions. The Newar people are the original inhabitants of the Kathmandu Valley of Nepal and also have a history of being truly amazing artists and craftspeople. Newars are famous for their breathtaking woodcarvings, bronze castings, pottery, stone carvings, metal smithing, and many more. If you are curious I encourage you to dig deeper into any of these languages highlighted in my series. Thank you so much to Mukti Sundar Jadhari and Sajan Laghu.
