In 1941, the circus contacted George Balanchine, a good friend and long time collaborator of Stravinsky, with the odd proposal to do a ballet for fifty elephants and fifty ballerinas, as the company had a very unique and famous elephant group traveling with the circus. Balanchine immediately suggested bringing on Stravinsky for the project. The Circus was thrilled and Balanchine contacted the composer by phone in January of 1942, with a phone call that he later recounts as going like this: Balanchine: "I wonder if you'd like to do a little ballet with me." Stravinsky: "For whom?" Balanchine: "For some elephants." Stravinsky: "How old?" Balanchine: "Very young." Stravinsky: "All right. If they are very young elephants, I will do it." This gave the Ballet its subtitle, For a Young Elephant. Though the piece is considered a polka at least in name, it has many odd rhythmic changes and disgruntled harmonies, giving the listener a sense of oddness to the structure. The elements of polka really come to a crux at the end with a borrowing of from Franz Schubert's Marche militaire No. 1 in D major, D. 733. Stravinsky denies this borrowing as a parody of Marche militaire, but later calls the whole piece a satire. Finished in February of 1942, the piece gives an audience an odd sense of closure, hearing the end clearly but feeling as though it is wrong. ----------------------- MALLETS: Robert van Sice Signature Series http://vicfirth.com/robert-van-sice/ ----------------------- FOLLOW US! ➤Website: http://www.vicfirth.com ➤YouTube: / vicfirthdrumsticks ➤YouTube (Marching): / vicfirthmarching ➤YouTube (Concert): / vicfirthconcert ➤Twitter: / vicfirth ➤Instagram: / vicfirth
