A wealthy British businessman living in colonial Egypt finds his comfortable life begin to unravel when he is haunted by the mysterious sound of footsteps that seem to follow him through the streets at night. This original recording is an audio presentation by Jasper L'Estrange for EnCrypted Horror. “THE STEP” by E.F. Benson, 1931. CREATOR’S NOTE: These recordings contain sound effects and music because that’s what I personally like to listen to, and what I enjoy making. As you will see from the comments, a lot of the listeners also like it. If it’s not your thing, please feel free to listen to the many other narrators who are voice-only. You don’t even need to spend the time to tell me about it*. **NOTE FOR YOUTUBE BOTS** This is MY channel. I read all the stories myself by speaking into the microphone. I add value by doing all the voices and putting all the emphases in the right places, requiring multiple takes. If you think it's easy, please upload your own attempts at narration so we can have a good laugh... Sometimes I even write my own stories - writing being a notoriously hard process that sends people mad, especially in Stephen King stories (see "The Shining", "Misery", "The Dark Half" etc.). I record all of these myself and edit and mix and master them, twiddling all sorts of knobs, painstakingly removing almost every gulp, cough, breath, sneeze, burp, tummy rumble, false start, stumble, pissmoprunciation, f**king neighbour using a power tool, phone alert, police using a battering ram on a neighbour's front door, etc. I create the thumbnail myself and write all this text for each upload. I provide value for my listeners by giving them something to listen to while they're awake, going about their business, driving, cleaning, walking, or by helping them get to sleep and stay asleep. If you don't believe me, read the comments. I also do comedy episodes where I provide commentary on stories from women's magazines, making jokes intended to amuse (if you doubt the skill involved, ask ChatGPT to make up a joke and just see what you get back...). Each upload represents about a day's work (anything from 8 to 16 hours, maybe more, definitely more if you add in all the time taken to research and find stories and read them, search for music and sound effects etc.). I'm sure my experience is very similar to that of other genuine human audiobook narrators on YouTube. It can't be "repetitous" because every single story is unique, representing an idea, a tone of voice, an attitude, a time and a place. Looking at my own algorithm, this seems markedly less repetitive than the umpteenth video you've recommended to me of a Gen Alpha "reacting" to The Beatles Abbey Road medley* or someone "reviewing" a "munchy box" from their local Chinese takeaway. And I will guarantee it took a hell of a lot more effort. So leave us alone you dopey B'stards. (*That is a great medley though.) 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 Supporting my work If you like, you can donate in the following ways: Patreon: / encryptedpod YouTube channel membership: / encryptedclassichorror One-off donation: https://ko-fi.com/encryptedpodcast You can now also say THANKS (on YouTube) with a SUPER THANKS!
