As the global humanitarian sector reels from the closure of major institutions like USAID and USIP, and grapples with escalating conflict and climate-driven disasters, the need for bold leadership and new models of response has never been more urgent. This event featured an intimate and timely conversation with Dr. Valerie Nkamgang Bemo, Deputy Director for Emergency Response at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Mike Delaney, RPL Humanitarian Action Fellow at Harvard Divinity School, who have been at the forefront of some of the world’s most significant humanitarian crises—from Haiti and West Africa to the Ebola and Nepal disasters. Drawing on over two decades of global field experience, they brought a powerful voice to the question: Can the humanitarian aid system survive—and if so, how must it transform? This webinar explored the collapse of traditional funding streams, the slow progress of localization, and the vital—but often overlooked—role of local and faith-based actors in responding to crises. It examined what a true humanitarian reset could look like, and what models of change are already emerging from the ground up. The conversation provided a unique opportunity to hear from some of the sector’s most visionary leaders at a moment of profound upheaval—and potential transformation. The event was moderated by Perlei Toor, MDiv ’26, CRPL’25. This event took place on April 23, 2025.
