Grey Mold Botrytis is a soil based pathogen that can be particularly damaging to tomatoes and strawberries in a hobby greenhouse. The highest risk is when there is a persistent stretch of high humidity (higher than 70%) and cool temperatures (15 - 18C) as had been the case in this greenhouse during the summer of 2020. Manage this disease through prevention, regular monitoring disposing of infected plants and ensuring you have lots of air flow through your crops. Prune tomatoes, open the door and, in some instance you may also need to add a fan to keep more air moving. Before, during and after pruning, wipe the blades of your pruning shears with rubbing alcohol of at least 70% concentration. This Beefsteak tomato and the entire plant was pulled and put in waste disposal. Do not compost. The pathogen will survive in your compost and you will infect other plants when using the infected compost.
