In the early 1990s, four siblings each made their way to the Eastman School of Music to study their string instrument of choice. Although they all arrived separately, and for their own reasons, all of them were drawn to Eastman because of the reputation of their string quartet in residence: the Cleveland Quartet. Although they had grown up together, playing the correct instruments for a string quartet, it hadn't occurred to them until their teachers at Eastman pointed it out that perhaps they should try to form a quartet of their own. From that moment, the Ying Quartet was born. Originally, it was Janet and Tim on violin, David on cello and Phillip on viola. After performing together in that configuration for about two decades, Tim decided to leave the group to pursue other things, leaving the three remaining siblings to search for new violinist. That role was filled for a year by Frank Huang before Ayano Ninomiya joined the group in 2010. With Ayano in place, the group began a new chapter in their story, adding a new voice to their already well-defined sound. As the members of the group reflect on that long history together, and on the challenges, as well as exhilaration that comes with making a change like that, it's clear that the passion for their craft that has sustained them for so long isn't showing any signs of waning. Find out what has made the group one of the premier classical string quartets performing today and what the next chapter in their story holds.
