Designing AI for Dirt, Data and Decision Making

Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to lift productivity, resilience and sustainability in Australian agriculture - but only if we address the structural barriers to adoption. Unlike other sectors, agriculture is biological, dynamic and deeply context-dependent, requiring AI to work alongside changing weather, soils, ecosystems, animal behaviour and human decision-making. Bringing together global and local perspectives, this session explores how FAIR and federated data can unlock value while protecting producer sovereignty; why AI must be integrated with human expertise and farm systems rather than treated as a standalone solution; and how trust, benchmarking and assurance reduce risk for producers. Drawing on international examples such as Europe’s digital twin and sovereign AI initiatives, the panel asks how Australia’s environmental diversity can become a strategic advantage for globally robust agricultural AI.
