Palm oil is in almost everything including the food we eat, the cosmetics we use and the shampoo in our shower. It’s cheap, versatile and everywhere. This is the reason palm oil has become one of the biggest drivers of deforestation in places like Sumatra and Borneo, leading to a loss of 80% of the orangutans forest on island of Sumatra, Indonesia. When the trees go, so too does the food. When that happens human/wildlife conflict follows. Sometimes the orangutans are killed in these altercations, or end up in the illegal pet trade and sometimes they’re rescued — like the ones living at Orangutan Haven in North Sumatra. Maria Suhatri, the marketing and communications manager @orangutanhaven, told me something that stuck with me: you don’t have to work with orangutans to help them. The choices we make every day, the products we buy and the food we eat, are connected to what happens in forests thousands of miles away. Palm oil is complicated. Millions of people rely on it for their livelihoods, but understanding the impact is a place to start. . . . #orangutan #sumatra #palmoil #conservation #wildlifejournalism @canonusa @canonasia @natgeoyourshot
