Using UV Dye to find Fuel Leaks
I noticed an oil leak under the 406 while parked, it left a stain on the yard wherever it had sat. I initially parked the car over some cardboard and was able to smell the stain and it smelt of diesel and came from the filter housing area. I bought some UV leak dye off ebay which came with a UV torch for about £9. The full bottle of dye which is very small was put into the fuel tank when the diesel was about 1/4 full. I then drove the car about 60 miles and checked the engine bay that night when it was dark. I had a look around all of the fuel system, the injector leak back pipes, the fuel pump, the fuel rail and fuel lines but they were ok, the fuel filter housing had visible signs of leakage. A new filter housing bought off ebay for £45 has solved the problem. The 406 HDi may have different types of fuel filter housing depending on the fuel system there is bosch or siemens systems, this car has the bosch system.
