Inside the VCSU Heat Plant: How Boilers Power an Entire Campus

This video takes an inside look at the Valley City State University steam plant, the facility responsible for keeping the campus warm through North Dakota winters. Inside the boiler room are Burnham Scotch marine boilers capable of producing tens of thousands of pounds of steam per hour. In this tour, we follow how natural gas–fired boilers generate steam, how combustion gases flow through the boiler, and how efficiency is achieved in large industrial steam systems. We also explore the condensate return system, vacuum pumps, deaerator, boiler feedwater pumps, and the controls that keep boiler water levels stable. The video follows the full cycle — from returning condensate to producing high-pressure steam for campus heating. A rarely used coal-fired hybrid boiler is also featured. This boiler was installed for a planned activated carbon production project that was never completed due to fuel transportation challenges. We examine its stoker, scrubbers, soot blowers, induced draft fan, and coal handling equipment.
