Watch the recorded lecture from February 4 at Pruis Hall featuring artist Jeffrey Gibson. Jeffrey Gibson (b. 1972, Colorado) is a multidisciplinary artist working across sculpture, painting, installation, video, and performance. A citizen of the Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians and of Cherokee descent, Gibson’s work brings together Native American materials and traditions with influences from Modernism to explore the intersections of identity, culture, and history. Raised in Germany, South Korea, and England, Gibson was shaped by diverse cultural environments and found connection through music scenes—an influence that continues to inform his practice. Song lyrics, costume, and performance play a central role in his work, alongside materials connected to Indigenous cultural practices, including beadwork, leather, drums, and metal jingles. Gibson received his BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and his MA from the Royal College of Art. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Claremont Graduate University in 2016 and named a MacArthur Fellow in 2019. His work has been exhibited widely, with solo presentations at institutions including the Brooklyn Museum, Times Square Arts, the Blanton Museum of Art, the Wellin Museum of Art, the New Museum, and the Denver Art Museum. His work is held in major collections such as the Smithsonian Institution, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Gibson currently lives and works in Hudson, New York. Arts Alive is an opportunity for Ball State students, faculty, staff and the greater Muncie community to experience world-class arts and artists at a fraction of the cost to see the same artists in major cities. Arts Alive is about exposing central Indiana to great art through classes, lectures, performances, and exhibits.
