6.03.20 | 5:30 PM PDT | Hollywood, CA | Sunset The emotionally heavy presence of the National Guard is profoundly felt here on Day 8 as peaceful protests supporting justice for George Floyd and awareness for Black Lives Matter continue to dominate streets and sidewalks along their route. The prevailing sentiment among marchers is one of determination to initiate a new mandate: stop talking about racism and make concrete manageable goal-oriented steps toward actually accomplishing its demise. There is anger and bone-deep grief for the senseless deaths and the institutionalized mistreatment and poverty and discrimination that have continued to plague generations of people from minority races in America and around the world. But there is also a palpable sadness that simply seeks to be healed - and underlying all there is hope: eternal human hope that, as one marcher articulated, melanin as a divider will soon be recognized as trivial and inconsequential. "We're all the same people inside," will win the battle forever, one fine day. Let it be soon. Hecklers filter in and out of the marchers and stand along sidewalks, taunting the protesters with racist epithets and jeers and white supremacist gestures and invitations for violent encounters, but the marchers move quickly to dissuade any of their companions who become tempted to take the bait. Their persistent adherence to nonviolence is a credit to their willingness to embody the principles of peace which they say empower them to embrace their steely resolve to rise above petty senseless detractions. It is not unusual to see protesters stop and engage the Guard troops in conversations, asking them their ages, their places of origin, smiling, relating to them one-on-one. Some respond, some do not. But the overall impression is one of mild bemusement, as though these desert-camo-khaki-clad warriors would gladly lay down their lethal weapons and jump into a volleyball battle with the reconciliation mongers instead. These protesters are not the looters and arsonist enemies who overran the commerce of privilege last week. These protesters are mainly genuine purveyors of personal and institutional justice-seeking peace - not war.
