Summary Script This light rail transit project is composed of two phases, the first phase consists of 3 lines; Cawang-Harjamukt, Cawang-Dukuh Atas, and Cawang-Jatimulya. A total line length of 43.3-kilometers is allocated in the initial phase along with 18 stations. The second phase stretches the other lines to further destinations such as Palmerah, Senayan, and Bogor Baranangsiang. And a further proposed line that would connect this system to the Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. The reported use of automation is of level 3, meaning that this rail system is of the highest technology compared to all of Indonesia’s train projects so far. A grade of automation level 3 means that a train will be operable automatically without the need of a machinist or in simpler words this will be the first driverless system in the capital. The rolling stock fitted for the Greater Jakarta LRT project is supplied by no other than Indonesia’s forefront rolling stock manufacturer PT Inka. An overall 31 six-car train sets were supplied and are expected to run a maximum speed of 100 kilometers per hour. This would ensure a capacity of 1,300 passengers in each train set and a daily passenger capacity of over 500,000. Construction of the project started in 2015 and was initially targeted to open by 2018, however, due to problems the majority of railways encounters such as land acquisition, financial and project engineering, and design and even due to a limited working time of only 6 hours sadly moved the project further into its date of completion, According to reports of today, the Greater Jakarta LRT is planned to start its commercial activities in 2022 with a maximum performance capability by August of the same year. According to ADHI a state-owned construction company of Indonesia that is behind this project stated in a report that the infrastructure cost of Greater Jakarta LRT is one of the lowest costs compared to other Light rail systems around the world. Giving comparable costs this project is only about 673 billion rupiahs per kilometer while other similar projects such as Canada’s LRT Calgary is about 2.1 trillion rupiahs per kilometer and similarly in a nearby country, Manila’s LRT Line 7 system is about 900 billion rupiahs per kilometer. To address climate change, this project has ideally implemented a grand solution for it. They have added the construction of sandwich panels which are noted to be the latest technological raw material innovation that basically encompasses a go green concept. What made this Indonesia’s latest and grand project is because not only that it is an automated driverless system but also the components that support it. From its Automatic Train Protection technology that efficiently helps reduce errors and maximizes passenger safety to using the latest train signaling systems, and even the use of advanced technologies that ensured that the construction was safe and efficiently handled. The construction of a Light rail transportation system will fully support and reduce the density of vehicles in Jakarta. This is in line with one of the government’s plans to provide a better, safe and efficient transportation system.
