The Wied Musa Battery located in Marfa , Malta is one of a string of coastal fortifications built during a stiffening of security under the leadership of Grandmaster Ramon Perelles Roccaful. It was completed by 1716, and paid for with 938 Scudi, the knights own currency. Initially there was only a 27kilo gun on the platform , four were added with the ammunition kept in St. Agatha's Tower also know as It-Torri l’Ahmar . Eighty two years later, in 1798 the Knights of Malta surrendered Malta to the French. They occupied Malta for two years. In 1800 the French surrendered Malta to the British. By 1835 the Weid Musa Battery was renovated to be used as the governors summer palace. The redan, was demolished and a second level was added, absorbing all but the left room of the blockhouse. To the left of the front door housed the marine police and a telephone station. Weid Musa served as a military school, and a convalescent hospital for the servicemen and women injured in Gallipoli and Crimea. The marine police remained present after the Marfa Palace Hotel began service sometime before 1920. George Vella also known as ‘George tal Marfa’ had acquired a 100 year lease from the government of Malta. Living witnesses describe it as lavishly furnished . The dining room was illuminated by large crystal chandeliers. The tables covered with white damask and set with silverware, and sizable sterling silver punch bowls glittered. dignitaries and civilians alike were served. The remainder of the lease was donated to the Catholic sisters in Malta. They used it as a summer retreat, possibly until 1970. There was a sharp decline in the 1990's, In 2005 a fire was started by squatters, who were evicted. Although the interior is in ruins the structure is sound. what is needed now are conservation buyers. CNG Trekventures - Beyond All Expectations.
