The Wied Musa Battery located in Marfa , Malta is one of a string of coastal fortifications built during a stiffening of security under the leadership of Grandmaster Ramon Perelles Roccaful. Weid Musa served as a military school, and a convalescent hospital for the servicemen and women injured in Gallipoli and Crimea. The marine police remained present after the Marfa Palace Hotel began service sometime before 1920. George Vella also known as ‘George tal Marfa’ had acquired a 100 year lease from the government of Malta. Living witnesses describe it as lavishly furnished . The dining room was illuminated by large crystal chandeliers. The remainder of the lease was donated to the Catholic sisters in Malta. They used it as a summer retreat, possibly until 1970.
