Popularised when it was chosen as the theme music for the TV drama 'Onedin Line', this is the 'Adagio of Spartacus and Phrygia from the ballet 'Spartacus” written by Armenian composer Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978). The work follows the exploits of Spartacus, the leader of the slave uprising against the Romans known as the Third Servile War, although the ballet's storyline takes considerable liberties with the historical record. Aram Khachaturian composed Spartacus in 1954, and was awarded a Lenin Prize for the composition that same year. It was first staged in Leningrad on 27 December 1956. This performance of the Adagio is by Manchester's Hallé Orchestra conducted by Maurice Handford (1929-1986). Handford was principal horn of the Hallé Orchestra from1949–61, then associate conductor 1966–71, and staff conductor. This recording comes from a 1980 His Master's Voice 12 inch vinyl LP titled 'Hallé Encore!' (FC 120).
