I recently spent a good solid afternoon/evening of railfanning at several locations in Northwest Indiana. I was expecting to see NS's Norfolk & Western heritage unit at some point in the day on the Chicago Line, and was almost discouraged after not seeing it all day- but on my way back to Chicago, I passed it by, sitting in Colehour Yard on the state line. I've included my still shot of it from that night- I'm very pleased with how it turned out! In order, the locations seen here are; Burns Harbor on the South Shore Line, Chesterton on the NS Chicago Line, Pine Junction in Gary on the NS and CSX Chicago Line(s) and CN's EJ&E, the Whiting Amtrak station, downtown Hammond on NS's ex-Nickel Plate, and finally Colehour Yard back in Whiting. Train descriptions are following: Train 1: South Shore Line car #1 has a very squeaky horn as it barrels through Burns Harbor at the Lake Michigan & Indiana / NS interchange with the South Shore, with 5 other cars headed west for Chicago. Train 2: Two Norfolk Southern Dash-9s bring a fast manifest eastbound through Chesterton, just east of the junction with Amtrak's Michigan Line and CSX's old Pere Marquette. Train 3: At Pine Junction in Gary, CN ex-Illinois Central GP38-2 #9618 and ex-Grand Trunk Western GP9M #4610 drift down the EJ&E "Hill Track" with a cut of cars for Kirk Yard. Train 4: A great lashup- two standard-cab NS SD70s run east on the Chicago Line with a manifest. Train 5: Seen at first behind the NS train, a CSX run-through freight comes down the Hill Track into Kirk Yard on the "J", led by an AC6000 and an SD50, both in new-ish YN3 paint. Train 6: A BNSF ES44DC and ES44C4 are the run-through power on a CSX intermodal (not sure of the symbol on this one... CSX fans, is this Q172, by chance?) eastbound on the old B&O main. Train 7: Using trackage rights, Canadian Pacific GEVOs haul mostly autoracks east on the NS Chicago Line, heading for the Detroit area. Train 8: A CN manifest with a Dash-9, C44-9WL, and a zebra-striped C40-8M cowl unit, slowly meets and overtakes the tail end of the CSX freight on the "J"'s Hill Track. Train 9: At the Whiting Amtrak station along the Lakefront, (CP 506 on NS's Chicago Line), generic GE power leads a fast intermodal east, with priority UPS trailers in tow. Train 10: Just to the south on CSX's Chicago Line in Hammond near State Line Junction, a stack train heads west towards either the 59th Street or Bedford Park yards. Train 11: A pair of NS Dash-9s swing around the curve in downtown Hammond on the old Nickel Plate towards Fort Wayne and beyond, with Triple Crown RoadRailers. I'm pretty sure this is either train 242 to Rutherford, PA, or 262 to Bethlehem, PA. Train 12: NS 8103, the Norfolk & Western heritage unit, is seen in this still shot awaiting its next assignment with other GE power at Colehour Yard, with the now-closed State Line Power Station in the background. The red light trails at the bottom are from an NS company truck that passed by in the 30 seconds my shutter was open! ~Thanks for watching!~
