Philip Kearny Jr., often referred to as “Kearny the Magnificent”, was a celebrated Major General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Born on June 1, 1815, in New York City, he came from a wealthy and socially prominent family. Despite his privileged background and a law degree from Columbia College, Kearny chose a military career, serving in both the Mexican–American War and the American Civil War. Kearny’s military exploits were marked by bravery and recklessness. He lost his left arm in combat during the Mexican War but continued to serve with distinction. He also fought with the French Imperial Guard under Napoleon III at the Battle of Solferino, becoming the first U.S. citizen to receive the French Légion d'Honneur. During the Civil War, he commanded the First New Jersey Brigade and participated in key battles such as the Battle of Williamsburg, the Battle of Fair Oaks, the Battle of Glendale, the Battle of Malvern Hill, the Second Battle of Bull Run, and finally, he was killed at the Battle of Chantilly (Ox Hill) His death occurred on September 1, 1862, during the Battle of Chantilly. While conducting reconnaissance in a thunderstorm, he mistakenly rode into Confederate lines. When ordered to surrender, he refused and was shot in the spine—a dramatic end to a fearless life
