How To Install Upgraded F80 M3 Brake Dust Shields

Dust shields aren't the sexiest mod/replacement out there, but if you own a 2015 - 2017 BMW F80 (or F82/F83/F87) car and want to get rid of that ungodly screeching sound when tiny pebbles get lodged between your rotors and dust shields, it's worth it. Disclaimer: doing this involves messing with your brakes so, if you're not comfortable doing that, this might be a job for the shop. Also, because this involves messing with brakes, I feel compelled to caution that I'm by no means an expert and my life insurance is up to date. That said, I dealt with the embarrassing issue of having the blood curdling sound of metal screeching against rock for just about as long as I've had this car thanks to BMW's terrible design flaw with these original dust shields (if you search old bimmerpost.com threads, you'll find people complaining about this about a months after the first F8Xs came out). Fortunately BMW redesigned the dust shields in 2018 to deal with this issue and you can buy the redesigned dust shields to replace the bad ones if you want. As mentioned in the video, one thing I don't love about this mod/replacement is that I couldn't do it like it's supposed to be done. To do this properly, you need a bearing press (I think that's what it's called) and, quite frankly, even if I had one, I'm not sure I'd be comfortable removing the entire hub assembly. Maybe. In any case, in the absence of that, you have to cut the thin strip of metal from the new dust shields and slide them on from the side. Really not a big deal and I don't think it jeopardizes anything since they're secured with 4 10mm bolts, but still.. I don't love workarounds. But more so, I really don't love the sound of screeching metal so I didn't mind this one. All in all the job takes some time just because there's a lot of moving parts, but it's not too difficult. And while I think I did my research on torque specs, I'd still double check them if you're using this as a reference - just to be safe. p.s. if you do this, don't forget to either lock the brake pedal in place or bleed the brakes afterwards or there will be air in the lines when the calipers are removed.
