Although it is originally a Russian folk tune "Stenka Razin" became the National Anthem for the newly formed "Almighty Cossack Host of Ukraine" in 1918 and refers to a Cossack leader who rose up against the nobility and was executed by the Tsar. It also makes for a lovely prelude or choir anthem to any hymn text with the syllabic meter 8 7 8 7 8 7. It is also known as "The Carnival is Over" a pop hit for The Seekers in the 1960's.
