INTRODUCTION The impact strength index was first developed by Protodyakonov (1926) by M.M. Protodyakonov senior. He proposed to evaluate the mechanical properties of rocks by means of an index known as the Protodyakonov strength index. Since then this index has found wide application in mining. The index gives the resistance of rock impact or dynamic loading to the destruction of rock. This index is used for various purposes such as: a) Classification of rock and rock mass b) Estimation of uniaxial axial compressive strength of the rock in the laboratory and in situ c) Assessing drillability and cuttability of mine rock PROTODYAKONOV APPARATUS Protodyakonov found that the pounding of rock produces dust proportionate to the compressive strength or hardness rock. The volume of dust produced is expressed in form of an index known as the Protodyakonov strength index. Based on the above principle he designed the Protodyakonov strength index test where rock samples are subjected to pounding or dynamic load by dropping a mass for a fixed height and given number of times. The fine dust produced to pounding action is measured to the strength index. It is consisting of two units which are made up of cylindrical steel tubes and bars (1) Pounding Apparatus (2) Volumometer Instructor: Dr. Radhakanta Koner, Department of Mining Engineering, IIT(ISM) Dhanbad Acknowledgment Prabhat Kumar Mandal Krishna Murari Birju Gope Vijay Karanga
