In 1768, over 1,400 people from the Mediterranean — mostly from the island of #Minorca, along with Corsicans, Greeks, and Italians — came to Florida under a false promise. Recruited by Dr. Andrew Turnbull to work on his “New Smyrna” colony, they endured years of brutal indentured servitude. Led spiritually by Father Pedro Camps, the survivors walked nearly 70 miles north to St. Augustine in 1777, where Governor Patrick Tonyn granted them refuge. This is the story of how those survivors — the Minorcans — rebuilt their lives and forever changed the culture of America’s oldest city. 📜 Featuring: The New Smyrna Colony and the truth behind its indentured labor system Father Pedro Camps and the “Golden Book” of the Minorcans Governor Patrick Tonyn’s intervention The birth of St. Augustine’s Minorcan community Lasting cultural influences still seen today in food, names, and neighborhoods 🕰️ Learn how one of America’s earliest immigrant groups turned suffering into legacy. #StAugustine #FloridaHistory #Minorcans #NewSmyrna #AmericanHistory #ColonialAmerica #HistoryDocumentary #HiddenHistory #Heritage
