A first-hand look at RJ & AE Godfrey spanning 440 hectares of main-crop potatoes for the fresh produce market, demonstrating ‘research into practice’ on an arable farm. Alex Godfrey talks about their work as SPot Farm hosts, how quality control and storage ensures a sellable product, and the challenges they face as a grower. AHDB-funded crops PhD students are usually taken on a 2-day tour in a region of the UK, visiting up to six different agricultural and horticultural businesses and/or research institutes to broaden their knowledge of the challenges and innovations in this sector, as well as learn more about potential career opportunities. These visits were unable to go ahead due to Covid-19 restrictions, so the video tour was produced for AHDB’s Crops PhD 2021 Conference to showcase a range of crop production systems, highlight how students could best apply research and innovation to industry challenges, and provide insight into technical careers to support the agriculture and horticulture sectors. ABOUT AHDB AHDB is a statutory levy board, funded by farmers, growers and others in the supply chain.
