Tip-17; In the rectum, the anterior part is covered by the peritoneum down to the peritoneal reflection and only the lower third is the circumferential (non-peritonealized) margin that should be inked for assessment of margin involvement by the tumor. Posteriorly, the circumferential margin includes the lower third and middle third and a narrow area in the upper third, which are considered circumferential (non-peritonealized) margins. In the rest of the colon, the posterior surfaces of the ascending and the descending colon are considered to be circumferential (non-peritonealized) margins. Involvement of the circumferential (non-peritonealized) margin is considered to be a positive margin. It does not alter the stage of the disease, unlike perforation, and remains pT3.
